Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch seems to have taken the company’s best ideas and combined them together. It has motion controllers similar to the Wii and portable functionality like the 3DS. I love being able to sit in front of the TV with the controllers in my hand, then be able to attach them to the main unit and pick the whole thing up to play on the go.

Each controller on the Nintendo Switch has the buttons you have gotten used to on consoles, along with the analog sticks, but with the additional motion sensors built into it. Games like Mario Kart allow you to use the analog controllers to steer or you can tilt the controllers, if you prefer. The flexibility is great. You can get plastic steering wheels to put controllers in or even a pro controller frame to combine the motion controls into a classic console style controller.

The screen on the Nintendo Switch is pretty decent and doubles as a touch screen, adding even more flexibility. Games look good in mobile mode, but even better when you place it on the dock to play on a TV. It’s great to be able to play mobile, then dock when the battery runs low to keep on playing. The opposite works just as well where you need to give up the TV to family and can go mobile.

Putting the console in suspend mode allows you to pause your game without keeping the console all the way on and you can then pick up where you left off later. In this mode, it also allows updates or downloads new digital purchases you made while you are off doing something else.

I’m a PC game, but I think the Nintendo Switch is the console all gamers should probably have.
