Once I started racking up longer hours on my Quest 3, I ran into fogging issues. This happened with my previous headset, so I knew my solution was to buy a Quest 3 face fan. Although it does add some noticeable noise when running, it completely solved any headset fogging issues for me.
Why is my Meta Quest 3 Fogging?
As more people develop their VR “legs” to endure longer sessions, it’s inevitable they will sweat and run into fogging issues. I’m sure after the holidays there were plenty of searches for “why is my Meta Quest 3 fogging?”. Lucky for me, I’ve seen this movie before and knew exactly what I needed.
During the week, I typically go to work, gym, sauna, shower and then play games. Before I learned of the importance of VR headset face fans, I’d have to wait like 30 minutes before playing virtual reality. If I tried to play right away, the heat and moisture on my head from the shower led to instant fogging in the headset.
I could wipe it away, but then it would just fog right back up. The same would also happen after playing VR for an extended period (headsets heat up). Waiting for my face to cooldown was the only solution, until I bought my first VR face fan.
With that previous face fan, I could turn it on and there’s be some fogginess at first, but quickly went away. Knowing the solution that already worked for me, I found and purchased the NVNV VR Cooling Fan for Quest 3.
Fixing my Quest 3 Fogging with the Face Fan Accessory
Once I received my new fan, I had to carefully remove the face gasket from my Quest 3 again. Getting the face fan was my primary goal, but the NVNV VR Cooling Fan for Quest 3 also replaced the face padding. The material is more comfortable than the original and it has a gasket for the nose to block outside light.
The assembly also included a dial on the side to adjust the lens distance to my face. Quest 3’s default adjustment requires taking the headset completely off, so this was a nice little upgrade for that. I typically keep the lenses close to my face, but it’s a great option for glasses versus contacts type days.
The fan itself has 3 speeds and works way better than the fan on my previous headset. I don’t think I’ve dealt with any fog for more than half a second since using it. The fan assembly includes it’s own rechargeable battery built with USB-C charging.
It has a battery level display on it, but obviously only useful when charging. Fully charged, I’ve had no problem with it lasting my entire VR session. The one minor annoyance with it is there is a noticeable whine from the fan motor.
When I turn my head quickly right or left, the whine from the fan changes pitch a bit. It’s noticeable, but well worth the price for being able to see clearly. If you are dealing with Quest 3 fogging like I did, then the NVNV VR Cooling Fan for Quest 3 will fix it for. Playing cooler is more comfortable to play VR longer.
