I’m loving Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but the latest update broke my game a bit. It reset cutscenes and locked me out of some interactions. Thankfully, I found out about a fix back in early access, when switching between my Steam Deck and PC. Not having to start over is great, so I wanted to share my Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Save fix. Hopefully this helps other poor souls.
My Great Circle Save Issues
I’ve played Indiana Jones and the Great Circle since the start of early access. It’s likely going to end up my game of the year. There were hiccups from that first weekend though. My gaming PC does not like to consistently sync save games for these big titles for some reason. Unlike Steam, there’s no sync status I can easily check.
Well when the official release dropped, I tried playing Indiana Jones via Xcloud on my Steam Deck and dealt with save sync issues. In the end, it ended up syncing a brand new game and I thought I lost all my progress. All saves are automatic, so I feared there was no way to go back.
Lucky for me, Machine Games put in a Save Rollback system that saved me. First, let me fast forward to another save game issue.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Update 2 Progress Issue
Once update number 2 dropped, I was happy to play with the new improvements. I had gone back to the Vatican to finish up the fight club and find a serpent key prior to the update. When I loaded up after the update, everything seemed fine.
Unfortunately, when I tried to revisit Gizeh, the game started that area from the initial cutscene. It also reset the photo ops that I had already taken. I thought maybe it was just a minor bug, but I got to the blue tent and was stuck. All my inventory and journal entries were still there and checked off.
That was the good news and the bad news. I didn’t lose that stuff, but when Nawal tried to give me the map, I got an “Item Limit Reached” message. Since I already had that map, the game wouldn’t let me take it again. That prevented me from even leaving the tent, so I desperately needed a Great Circle save fix.
I tried going back to Sukhothai and same thing, the game reran the initial cutscene for the village. It broke the guide merchant and broke the quest to find Aran. It would not trigger the Gina conversation to get the latter quest to continue on. I knew I was screwed.
Just for a test, I also went back to Marshall College and that was even worse. It started that area back to before I even got the journal, so I couldn’t try easily traveling anywhere else.
My theory is that going back to the Vatican before the update tricked game. It’s like the game thought I had never made it passed the Vatican. To test that theory, I decided I’d try rolling back to an earlier Sukhothai.
My Indiana Jones Save Game Fix
Back when I ran into my Steam Deck/Xcloud/PC save sync issue, I found the life saving Save Rollback feature. In the save sync situation, I chose Game Slots at the main menu:

If the option is not available, I found I could start the new game up to the first auto save point, then go back to the main menu to get it. After choosing my saved game slot (I only had 1 on this screen), I could then choose the beautiful Save Rollback feature (R key on PC):

I was so relieved to see multiple entries with hour counts for each. All I had to do is chose the one that had the most hours and my progress was restored. I would have started over because I love this game, but glad I didn’t have to.
As for the more recent issue with Indiana Jones Update 2, I used similar to steps. The major difference is that my save with the most hours, in this case, was the broken one. What I had to choose is a Sukhothai save about 3 hours in the past. My hope was this save would make it clear to the game how far into the adventure I was.
Lucky for me (and possible others that read this), it worked. Sure I had to play an hour or so to get back that 3 hours, but I do not have to start over. The puzzle that was broke, worked now. No broken interactions and I was able to revisit other areas without issue or forced intro cutscene (just like before Update 2).
Maybe the developers fix this issue with a patch later or maybe it’s just a fluke. If it happens to others, I hope they can find their Indiana Jones and the Great Circle save fix here.
Game is badly broken, When re-visiting areas, the game resets the area you get locked down into restarting that location. This results in some very odd problems.
You have to revisit due to need a breather for the vatican. You go back to gizeh you get stuck because you can’t pickup a map you already have, which prevents you from leaving a tent
It’s a huge mess and not sure how this passed any kind of quality/bug checks.
I hope they sort it all out before the DLC drops.
DLC is dropping and still no bugfix. I’m not going to play DLC if they don’t fix it.
Unfortunately it is still not fixed, but look at my reply to Simon below. Bethesda gave me steps to workaround the bug. An hour of work (fun cause it’s still a game) is much better than waiting for them to patch it or starting over. I really liked the DLC.
I litteraly cannot start the DLC, which I paid for, because of this issue
Unfortunatly my save backups don’t go that far
I had to go through Bethesda’s support. After jumping through plenty of “try this” hoops, one of the support guys gave me the steps. After getting the robes from Antonio/getting out to the Vatican library, just go outside and take the 4 inscription pictures for the Stolen Cat Mummy mission. I used youtube to remind me where they are. After taking the 4, just go back to his office to continue on. Next go to the post office to talk to the camera guy (you can’t buy the camera, but no worry). Nearby is the Tower of Nicolaus V. Go there to get to the underworld to solve the sacred wounds puzzle. When you get through that mission you will see Gina and following her gets you the trigger. Took an hour, but I’ve now played/finished the DLC and it is really good. Beats waiting for a patch or starting over.
You sir, are a HERO. I completed 99% of the game, couldnt go back to giza for my last achievement (radios), which also meant no all collectibles achievement. We bought the dlc with my brother and I alreade gave up on trying to play it!
Glad to help. Now enjoy and let’s both hope they come with more (because a sequel would take much longer).
