When you have more time to talk about games, than actually play them.
RPG stands for Role Playing Games. The most storied games ever made seem to fall into this category. You take control of a fictional character (or a few) in fictional settings. You to play the role you were given or the role you want (via stat increases and other choices).
The RPGs we play now have to give a lot of credit to the tabletop versions that came before them. Those simple, yet complex cards with multi-sided dice allow each game to be different. A new and unique adventure can be had with a roll of those dice and the choices the player makes.
There is a whole range of video game versions of RPG board games. One game might have real-time gameplay, while others offer a turned base approach. The latter offers more time for decisions based on stats. Styles range from side scroller to top down and first person view.
Fallout games made the switch from the top down RPG style to first person view. They give you a chance to role play as a survivor of a nuclear war. You immerge from a special bunker called a vault. It gives you choices in which stats you spend points on and the conversation choices you make. This freedom leads to different game outcomes.
The Elder Scrolls franchise is the most famous and infamous of RPGs. Though usually littered with bugs, they are hailed as the best role playing experience. It’s your chance to be good or evil in a land of magic and mythical creatures. Skyrim is still being played and mods created by the community to this day.
